Coffee has a history that can be traced back as far as 1000 AD. Its introduction to the West is somewhere around 1600 and since then it has become a part of daily life in many countries. Since 1600 the drink which is now consumed all over the world has undergone many transformations with the birth of what we currently know as instant coffee taking place in 1901. In 1907 Brazil became the worlds largest producer of coffee producing 97% of the worlds output, and in 1920 when prohibition was introduced in the US the demand exploded to the extent that America consumed 70% of the worlds coffee production.

So that’s a potted history of coffee which is now one of the world’s most popular beverages and has become a valuable commodity traded in markets all over the world. In today’s hectic lifestyles there is the never ending passion to strive for greater perfection and coffee has not escaped, to the extent that there is a plethora of gadgets, machines, flavours and methods of extracting coffee. The coffee pod is just one of these modern methods invented in 2001 by Philips and Douwe Egberts and famously making its UK debut at Harrods in London when shoppers were invited to step inside the famous store window and experience a cup of coffee produced by the new machine made by Philips using coffee pods made by Douwe Egberts. As we know it doesn’t take long before other manufacturers and producers join in where money is involved in a commercial economy and there are now hundreds of choices in terms of coffee machines and coffee pods producing different flavours and various methods of extracting what each manufacturer believes is the best tasting coffee The coffee pods are supplied in various quantities some specific to certain machines. Coffee Pods can be used with adapters so that older machines can now be used with newer coffee pods therefore catering for individuals who prefer using certain type of coffee pods in their machine. Newer machines with the ESE logo on them can normally accept coffee pods from various manufacturers. So why use coffee pods? Well to a certain extent they can take out some of the guesswork out of making a good cup of coffee. Some people judge a good cup of coffee by the crema, some by the flavour or acidity. There is an art to getting it just right, the measurement, the freshness, the roast , the temperature and the water pressure, these and many other factors contribute to producing the perfect cup. Coffee pods contain just the right amount of perfectly prepared ground coffee that is encapsulated in a paper pod to produce just the right cup of coffee. |
